Aesthetics and Innovations

The style and aesthetic feel for Mary Miss are obvious and constant. She uses grid and simple shapes in intriguing patterns and combinations. As well, she uses soft natural shapes and materials to create a oddly comfortable contrast between what appear to be the forces of man and nature. Also, although all architects deal with the interaction between space and user, Mary Miss has taken it to a level previously unseen. Whether it be making inhabitants walk through labyrinth like halls to finally reach a calm open center area (to make them appreciate it), or the always changing door at the Ohio State University which allows its user to slide its colored and mirrored panels to create a new look as they see fit. She uses basic modern materials such as metal, wood and in her out door creations abundant plant life to bring focus to the patterns, interactions and feel of a creation. She has achieved every designer’s goal of using simplicity and a knowledge of how we interpret the spaces around us to create distinct moods with economic use of materials.
