Biography

Born in New York, 1944 Mary Miss is one of the most interesting artists we had a chance to look at. She has fused sculpture, architecture and installation art to define a unique and intriguing style that is nothing but her own. She began with minimal low-cost, temporary installations, which got the visitors to think about their built environments and their interaction with them. As her ability, ambitions and recognition grew she began doing larger, more permanent work that was usually outdoor environments for museums and campuses. Her works began in the mid 1960s, a culture where change was happening and the environment was shifting around us. It seems fitting her style was engineered to make us consider the spaces around us and the way we interact with them. Her strongest influences are the forts, abandoned mines and buildings and aboriginal sites she was exposed to as a child. Then later in sculpting school she was introduced to John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Morris, which left an impression on her as well.
