University of Washington

This grassy area outside of the University of Washington hospital shows the organic forms and spaces that are common in Mary Miss’s work. The segmented ponds give changing reflections of the scenery and provide it with a living, integrated sense with the surrounding environment. These shapes flow with imprinted beds towards the end of the enclosure that has latticework, covered seating and screen mesh. These features outline the organic shape and feel of the area as well as give it a contained definite sense of space once inside. The mesh and lattice are used to provide a fragmented and hazed view of the surroundings to give a detachment and separation from the outside world.
