The Design and Construction
Utzon design was done under a urban waterfront context. The design is concirided to have temprate climate.

Construction of the Opera House Began in 1959, after the demolition of The Fort Macquarie Tram Depot. The Sydey Opera House was built in three different stages. The first stage, the upper podium, was built from 1959 to 1963. Stage two was the construction of the outer shells and was built between 1963 to 1967. Stage three was built in the next six years from 1967 to 1973. The third stage was the interior design and completeing the construction of the opera house.

The Civil and Civic construction firm began construction of the podium December 5, 1958.
the Government had wanted construction to begin as soon as possible in fear that funding and public support might stop. Because of some set-backs, most notable the weather and the construction drawings were not done properly, constructon was 47 weeks behind. work on the podium was finished on Augest 31, 1962, but the podium colums hasd to be rebuilt because they were not built strong enough to support the roof.

The design of the roof was not established until mid 1961. The shells were designed as sections of a sphere that would be supported by precast concrete ribs. Hornibrook Group Pty Ltd constructed the shells, and also constructed stage three (the interior). All manufactuing was done on-site by Hornibrook Group Pty Ltd. They manufactued 2 400 precast ribs and 4000 roof panals in an on-site factory.

The cost of the project was only at 22.9 million befor the interior construction began. This is only a quater of final cost of teh project. Utzon would resign in 1966 after achange in parliment. Utzons design had only allowed for 2 000 seats in the main hall, and if there were more seats, the acustics would be thrown off.

The Opera House was officialy completed in 1973 with a total cost of $102.
