What’s your story? Writing about yourself is a paradox* - it can be both the easiest and most difficult challenge, all at the same time. Nevertheless, it is time to grab the bull by the horns, or in this case, the pen by the barrel, and get writing. Why this assignment, Mr. Bennett? Because it gives me an opportunity to learn something interesting about you early on, even before I know who you are! That’s why. But I’m B-O-R-I-N-G! I don’t do anything exciting, I’m not planning on doing anything exciting, and so I have nothing to write about. Not true! You all have some sort of habit, hobby, interest or quirk that makes you who you are. Now stop whining and spill the beans! Just to show you how easy it is, I’ll get the ball rolling by telling you a little bit about myself. I was born in Halifax. I currently live in Bishopville (outside Hantsport) with my wife, our three daughters, Kate and Julia, & Claire, and our wiener dog, Denis Potvin. We met (my wife and I, that is) through mutual friends while I was going to school at Acadia University, where I earned both my Arts degree (English, History) and my Education degree. My greatest pastime while growing up was playing and following soccer, which has rewarded me with wonderful friends all over the country and abroad. My favourite team is Manchester United. I quit playing hockey in grade 9 because I wasn’t having fun anymore. I went back to the game when I went to university and played in an intramural league with a bunch of soccer friends. Since then, I’ve stayed on my skates and usually look forward to talking about the New York Islanders with anyone who will listen. In addition to sports, I like to spend my “me” time reading, working on the computer (both searching the internet and learning new software). If I get a chance, I also like to listen to music while I’m working. 80’s and alternative music are what I listen to, what I grew up with, and it’s what I still embrace. It’s funny how many students laugh at that, and then name a favourite band that is overwhelmingly 80’s influenced. I am always looking for new music to add to my collection, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to offer them – in your own write-up. |
