Exploding a moment Exploding a moment is a technique writers use to enrich the details of a story. In the process, it creates a familiarity that many readers can connect with, as they've experienced similar situations. Ever have one of those moments where it felt like time stood still? Even though something happened for only seconds, people still talk about "their life flashing before their eyes." Sometimes, it feels like things happen in slow motion in our lives - that time you fell backwards off the fence at the farm, for example. As your body hurtled to the ground, all your senses became more aware of the situation- you clearly heard the gasp of your friends as you slipped. You saw beautiful countryside turn to bright blue sky, and you felt the departure of seat from fence. Simultaneously, you feel your hands grasping for support, only to clutch at thin air. You mind tries to recapture the "lay of the land" as you wonder about rocks and your body contorts to avoid other nasty objects you might land on. Your mind anticipates the fall - how much it might hurt, when it will happen (and why it hasn't happened yet) All while a blast of adrenaline fills your belly. That's a lot going on in a fraction of a second! YOUR CHALLENGE is to take a moment from your life explode the moment. Recount and record all the tiny details of what was happening, how you processed information, what information you processed, and how your body responded to the situation as it happened. A Full Page, Single-spaced effort is appreciated. Additional info is available here |
