Websites - design and function

To put it in simplest terms, most internet users have a handful of favourite websites - the ones we always seem to visit when we're online. Of those websites we've chosen, there are probably dozens of other options we could look at instead. The question is, why do you look at that site? After all, we the internet is based on instant feedback - patience is not common, as people click and tap, back up and reload, all while trying to get a media fix.

With only fractions of a second to grab and keep surfers, how do successful web designers manage to hold your attention?
