A mark is a recorded gesture, and as you may note, we have the ability to gesture many things. Many experts believe that 90% of what we say to another person comes through our body gestures. For centuries, artists have explored the many ways to make a statement through a recorded gesture, or mark. We will begin by: 1. IDEA? With a partner, make a list of 30-50 adjectives / descriptors of various emotions or states of mind. 2. TRANSLATION. On your own, invent a mark for the 30 words. these marks should be unique to the word.. standing for it. 3. ARTICULATION. Taking the best, or most unique and diverse, eight marks and draw them out on larger scale (1/4 page each). Be aware and deliberate about how the marks are situated within the rectangle as its arrangement will effect how the mark is interpreted. 4. PRODUCTION. Turn four of these into full drawings, where in the end, each mark and its composition on the paper can represent that particular emotion or state of mind. 5. We can test their power of communication by sharing these with their peers, to see if they can describe what the mark represents. |
