Jen Bishop & Laura Cudmore – Garbage

We first stated with a complex idea to represent pollution and littering. When Jen Bishop and I, Laura Cudmore proposed the idea to Mr. Syme he said that the idea was too vague and we needed to be more specific in the message we were trying to send. So Jen and I brainstormed on exactly what we were trying to send across to the viewers of our video. Several days passed and everyone else in the class was way ahead of us on their projects; we had doubts on whether we would even get our project ready by the deadline.

We began walking around the school with a video camera talking about different movies we had seen. I remembered seeing a Lego film and wondered how the made the Lego toys move – they obviously didn't move on their own. Eventually we figured out the type of video that we wanted to do – "stop and go", we called it. Jen and I practiced around the school. first Jen sat at the end of a hallway, I recorded a frame of her sitting still, then she'd move a foot or so closer to the camera, I recorded a frame of that and continued the procedure. We stopped it and watched it, then laughed because we knew we had come up with a good plan for our project.

Neither of us wanted to be in the video so we decided to use a prop instead. I think that was a good idea looking back on it because the object was simple so the message would be more important than the object. If the object was complex then people would be focusing on it and looking at those details – that is why we used a mitten. Realizing that a mitten would not stand on by itself, we stuffed it with crumpled up paper.

During the shoot we experimented with different camera angles even though we really didn't have any experience with cameras and recording. We thought it was a good idea to try new things sucha as the different angles because it gave some shots a different expression.

Editing was not as fun as shooting the video. We added music, some text and some end shots with slow motion and different effects that were offered to us on the video editing program we used. We eventually got our video done on time and without too many problems. We had fun, learned new things and turned out with a success.
