Christine and Tristan's 20 th Century Project

This project displays practical objects from this century. One of our objects was re-located into the 1940's. We did research on the other three objects. Enjoy!
Eternity a well known, recent brand of perfume was placed into a family picture taken from the 1940's. The family photo was obtained from the December issue of National Geographic Magazine. The ad was a Coca Cola ad but it was altered and the perfume bottle was placed into the ad. The appearence of the perfume bottle was changed by re-shaping the cap of the bottle into a religious symbol. The significance of altering the ad and the bottle was to symbolize that although perfume is a well known and frequently used product it has no place in family life either in the 1940's or today. Perfume is not a product that is required for everyday life and advertising has made it a high priced and well known. In the ad shown the bottle is displayed as a religious object that would be common in the average household during the 1940's. The ad was origonally designed to evoke emotions of Christmas cheer and family security after the father or husband has returned from war. During it's time it would have been a very effeective and influencial ad due to the relevence of the topic being displayed. This is an example of a SPIRITUAL object.

Credit Cards are well known and freqeuntly used in our modern day society. The reason that they are used so often by us is because it gives us a sense of security with or money. It is also better than carrying around cash . Credit cards have only been around in the last 20 years due to the technology requirment for their effeicency. There are many different kinds of credit cards out on the market for you today. Most businesses have installed Interact because of the huge demand for it; you'd be surprised how many people just carry around mastercards. If your business does not have Interact, some customers may go elsewhere, it's a convienience that with our technology, can be used all around the world. This is an example of a PRACTICAL object because it is new technology used to take the place of money.
Compact Disc's are used far more frequently in the average lifestyle. They rapidly raplaced records, tapes and computer discs. They can now be used to record music and programs from computers. They are portable and effecient. They can be recorded over several times. Many people have access to CD burners which allow you to burn songs or computer programs onto CD's. This has caused music stores to lose business because many people can just download the CD that they want and have it burned which is just as good in quality as the original CD. There are now even home cd labeling kits which is where you can design your own labels to make them look even more like the real thing, all you have to do is pick an image and print out the copy of it and stick it on the CD. These kits are affordable too. This is an example of an EXPRESSIVE object because it is mostly used to express the feelings and emotions of musicians.
The last object that we looked at from this century was a CD burner. These are very useful tools that enable you to burn computer programs, full CD's and MP3's. They come installed in computers now so if you are looking for a computer on the market today there will most likely be a CD burner already installed and ready to go, all you have to do is buy the CD's which will only cost you about $1.20 to make. It saves you money BIG TIME in the long run. This is an example of a POLITICAL object because of the issue of it being illegal to burn music or MP3's onto CD's.
