A Brief Biography of Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry, was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on February 28,1929.
He was a part-time student at the University of South California. Frank was going to art school but he soon changed his mind. Once he was a full time student, Frank began to realize that architecture was a field he wanted to be in.

Frank O. Goldberg was his real name. It was not changed until he had moved to Los Angeles, with his family, because his father grew ill. His family was really struggling for money, so Frank had to find a job. He worked as a deliveryman, where he would meet his soon to be wife Anita Snyder. They were married in 1952. Two years later, with the permission of his family, Frank decided to change their last name to Gehry. They had two daughters, and then eventually got divorced in 1966. Frank had some relationship problems, but remarried ten years later to Berta Isabel Aquilera, they had two sons.

Frank went to a Hebrew school, and he even spoke Yiddish. This would help him, in later years with some of the places that he would work in. Some if his French schooling would give him the upper hand when he worked in Europe, at a later date. Frank was given a nice name in school; many people didn’t accept his religion, which was Judaism. So they gave him the nice name, “Fish.” This nickname was supposed to put him down, but he didn’t let it get to him, and used it later, as a basis for some of his creations.

After graduation, Frank joined the army. His skill was recognized and soon he was designing furniture. This was the first peak into what would be an amazing collection of furniture for the young architect. Once Frank left the army, he enrolled at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design to study urban planning. Part way through the year, he decided he was unhappy with the major due to its vagueness so he just finished out one year there.
