Abstract Collage Painting

Two paintings are copied to black and white and formed into a collage. The one's we chose to work with are:

lismer

Arthur Lismer. Pines, Georgian Bay. 1927. Oil on canvas. 91 cm x 111 cm.
Credit: Collection of the University of Saskatchewan. Purchased 1928.

delecroix

Eugène Delacroix. Girl Seated in a Cemetery. 1824. Oil on canvas. Louvre, Paris, France.

These images were collaged at 20.5cm X 15cm then gridded into 5cm squares, the corners were then connected. This overlay grid is used to enlarge the image and it may also be included in the final work.

This collage is then used as a referent to make a painting. The painter has choices to make around brushwork; colours; and to include the lines or not, some or all.

Learning Targets:

The student will create a painting and

  • it integrates three images in a way that is clear, creating a new abstract composition.
  • the entire frame is considered (no blank areas remaining).
  • your composition stears the eye (considered Principle of Design)
  • adopts a single colour scheme (primaries, secondaries, complimentary, warm/cold, etc)
  • uses paints in layers, mixes precise colours before applying.
  • has a variety of large, medium, and small (or detailed) elements.
  • key features of the collage are described through paint.

Painting can be a real challenge, stick with it, apply paint in layers and move from making general forms to being specific over time.
