Art Journal ASSIGNMENT

A primary objective of this course is for each student to be able to clearly communicate or represent a particular idea. Drawing is an activity proven to bring people to this objective. Strengthening drawing skills takes similar initiatives to that of an athlete. For an athlete to become strong and coordinated they need to constantly practice their skills. As with drawing, the budding draftsperson must also exercise their hands and brain through regular practice to achieve success. In the recognition that exercise makes the artist and the athlete, I have designed the following fitness program for you.

Art Journal EXPECTATIONS:

The IWB is like an organ -- it is a natural extension of your creative self. In it you collect images that perk your interest or inspire you. You draw subjects from life, explore ideas, manipulate found images, experiment with gestures and materials, write poetry, record research into artwork and artists, etc.

Art 10 & Design 11: About 2 drawings / week

Advanced 11, Art 12, and IB SLA: 20-30 drawings / term

Adv Art 12, IB SLB or IB HLA: 30-40 drawings / term

Each page is to be titled and dated.

For students wanting grades in the 90-100 range, you should include written responses to your artwork, describing such things as:

  • why you chose the subject,
  • how did you feel before, during, and after your drawing. Please be descriptive.
  • what challenged you in the drawing,
  • what are you trying to express, state, investigate, explore, or build upon,
  • and how your skills or understanding devloped from doing this drawing?
  • BE SPECIFIC with responses in terms of materials and processes and attempt to be as reflective as possible.
